Top 10 Powerful Minimal WordPress Themes for Blogs in 2021
If you’re opening this post in a new tab to read, you must have a basic knowledge about what is Domain and Web-hosting. Only then, you’ll understand what WordPress themes are about. If not, peruse this article here.
Okay. Let’s talk about themes.
As per biology, we all have similar taste buds in our mouth. But every one of us has a different taste palate. Some like sweets. Some like their spice. Surprisingly, a few are fond of sour.
The answer is Genes. Like physical and psychological characters, we inherit our taste sensitivity from our parents.
Why am talking about taste buds in an article about themes?
Importance of WordPress Themes
Like our taste palate, Beauty is subjective. There is no absolute right or wrong choice for your selection of themes. After all, it is your blog. If you’ve quality content, the theme might not even matter to the visitors.
Let’s say your niche is Green energy. You’ve selected a pitch-black theme for your blog. You might ask ‘So what?’. I have two answers.
1) Green Color consumes less energy than other colours. It wouldn’t be a wise choice to pick other colours if you’re a Green energy enthusiast.
2) Visual Aesthetics. The theme should support your content.
Imagine this. Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi explaining the concepts of Non-violence, Satyagraha, and Agrarian importance.
What’s wrong with that? That’s a good thing. Right?
He is discussing those concepts with farmers, wearing a polished velvet 3-piece suit. That reduces the impact of the message. Doesn’t it?
Even when you have powerful content, the relevant aesthetics matters. It highlights the meaning of your words and elevates its importance.
Why should it be minimal?
To pique someone to visit your blog is not a success. Making them visit often is a success. Be it Casual glancers or Voracious readers, a clutter less minimal theme makes them come back.
A minimal theme gives the option to maneuver freely inside your blog. If the theme is clean, it’ll motivate the readers to stay longer on your blog. That would, in turn, increase your web traffic.
How to create a website from scratch?
Before we discuss the colorful combinations of RGB, let me take a detour here. I’ve dedicated this section to those who are aware of the theoretical concepts. But haven’t had any face to web real-time experience.
I am creating a website from scratch. If you want to get straight into the themes section, here. (Bookmark link)
I am registering a domain exclusively for this article. Let me show you the process.
1) Most of the hosting services include a free domain within their package. You can choose your domain there. Or
2) You can register your domain and web-hosting separately.
This is your preference. For the sake of complexity, I am registering my domain at Freenom and hosting at 000webhost. Don’t worry. It doesn’t matter where you register. The process is similar.
If you open a domain registration site, it would look like this. You can check your domain availability here.
Once you’ve checked it, it will open the available extensions. Again, extensions are your preference.
I’ve chosen my domain name ‘How2CreateAwebSite’. Here it shows the available extensions and its price. After we confirm the extension, it would go to the checkout cart.
Sign in using your mail account, Gmail, or Facebook. Since I’ve chosen a free domain, the price is 0 USD. When you sign in here, the site will send you a mail verification link.
After the verification, the site will take you to the billing part.
Here fill up the details and complete the order. On the next page, you’d pay for your domain. Once the payment is successful, Voila. You have an active domain.
Here I am using the 000Webhost. Because they have an option to use their service for free. Go to your preferred web-hosting site. Read through their plans and features.
If you want to checkout GreenGeeks, click here.
Once you’ve selected a plan, the site would take you to the sign-up page. You can use your mail, Gmail, or Facebook.
After signing up, your selected plan will open. I’ve chosen ‘free web hosting’.
Check your mail for the verification link. Once you click that, the site will take you to the payment portal. When the payment processing is done, you have an active domain and a platform to host it.
How to install WordPress
Almost all the hosting platforms give the option to install WordPress on their opening page. Even though there are alternatives to it, WordPress powers 33% of total websites.
Select Install WordPress. It’ll open a drop-down menu, where you can choose your Username and password for WordPress.
Fill up the details and click Install. Your hosting provider would take care of the rest.
WordPress installation is finished. Click the Configuration page. Welcome to the WordPress Dashboard.
There is something called ‘Nameservers’. Those who used the same hosting provider for their domain may not experience this. They can type their URL in the browser to go to their site.
Those who have used the different providers, they have to change the nameservers. Nameservers simplify the process of accessing your website. By now, your web-hosting provider would’ve emailed you how to change the nameservers. Follow the link.
Click Nameservers and custom nameservers. It’ll let you type the new nameservers. Follow the instructions given in the email.
Once you’ve changed the nameservers, go to your web-hosting page. Add your domain name on their dashboard. Park your domain there and link the website.
Congratulations. Your website is online. Done and Dusted.
Minimal WordPress Themes
What’s the criteria of minimal?
I’ve divided that into two.
1) From the reader’s perspective.
- The web page should load fast. If it takes a lot of time and data, that’s not a good sign.
- Minimum clutter.
- Easy to view and understand the concept of your webpage.
- Ease of access. Direction to go through the webpage should be simple.
2) From our perspective.
- The page should not consume a lot of resources. Web hosting provides us with limited storage. We should manage that properly.
- Designer friendly. Most of the themes are drag and drop. Even then, some of them are a little advanced to edit and update.
- Budget friendly.
- Ready to use out of the box.
Let me start the list with my personal favorite.
Read – my favourite WordPress theme
If you’re a fan of newspapers, you’d definitely like this. An old school minimal wordpress theme design which focusus on the content rather the images.
As the name itself proclaims, Foodica’s default layout is perfect to attract the foodies. With minimal change to the design, you can create your food-based blogs. It also includes a recipe index template. Woocommerce integration is provided with this theme. It comes in a lighter version too.
A perfectly suitable theme for those fashion ecommerce enthusiasts. It is a completely image-oriented theme. It comes with 9 homepage concept templates.
A stripped-down theme comes with very less customizable choices. It comes with only 6 color options and promotes the complete focus on the content.
Merchandiser– E-commerce WordPress theme
I don’t think I’ve to say anything about this theme. The name itself screams ecommerce. The purpose is very clear. Elegant, polished and cutting-edge finish.
Kalium is one of the heavy weights in this pick. It comes with so many options for niche topics. A total of 21 templates which covers photography, fashion, travel and even constructions. Theme is integrated with Woocommerce. It has an individual section for portfolios. Most of the options are open in the free version.
Light as Air.
If you’ve a lot of sub menus in your design, squarex would be perfect for you. It accommodates all of them in the homepage itself.
It is similar to Read. A simple and straight solution to bloggers.
Astra – the Heavyweight WordPress theme
The big brother of themes. Lightweight. All their templates are less than 50kb. It provides support for developing tools like Elementor, Beaver builder, Gutenburg and Brizy. Astra has over 100 free starter templates, which are ready to import. It doesn’t matter what the purpose of your webpage is. They cover all the areas. Woocommerce is integrated with the theme. But on a negative scale, Astra is a little advanced theme to edit and arrange. It has many wonderful features but they are available for only Pro buyers.
You can also check out Morning time, Arnold, Latte, Olsen lite and Oliver.
Yes, Beauty is subjective. The purpose of everyone who wants to create their own website varies. Some of the readers may not like the appearance of your website. At the end of the day, it is your web-page. So, create it to your liking.
There was a time when only the coders could create a site. But the technological advancements have simplified the process. The open source tools available in the market have bridged that gap. We can create our website in under an hour. Introduce minimalism to your daily routine too.
